Sadly, during the 4th of July celebration many animals go missing. Pets will get scared and desperately try to escape from the loud bangs and booms that fireworks produce.

The Humane Society reports that one out of every three pets gets lost during his or her lifetime, and onlyone in 10 lost pets are found. Pets can jump fences out of fear and confusion, and the day after 07/04, shelters are packed with runaways.

If you live in Southern California, you can get your pets microchipped for free. The event is happening in San Diego **before Independence Day**.

The San Diego Humane Society, along with five other rescue organizations are opening up clinics to microchip pets. This event is known as “Hip To Chip!” It lasts from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 27, (5 days away!!!). It’ll be held in San Diego, Escondido, and Oceanside at the Human Society [SD: 5500 Gaines St., Escondido: 3500 Burnet Drive, Oceanside: 572 Airport Road].

There are also other places too if you can’t make it to these places during the one-day chipfest: IB Pet at 600 Palm Ave. #127 in Imperial Beach, the El Cajon Animal Shelter at 1373 N. Marshall Ave. in El Cajon, Frosted Faces Foundation at 1448 Pine St. in Ramona, and Chula Vista Animal Care at 130 Beyer Way in Chula Vista.

The event is being run by the Humane Society, Second Chance Dog Rescue, Spay Neuter Action Project, Frosted Faces Foundation and Lionel’s Legacy.

What is microchipping?

Microchipping is a safe way to permanently identify your pet if it ever gets lost. Microchips are about the size of a grain of sand, and are placed beneath the skin of the animal b/t its shoulder blades. It’s very similar to getting a vaccine shot, and the process takes only a few seconds.

You need to make an appointment:

You must make an appointment in advance before driving up to any of the seven participating sites at https://form.jotform.com/IBPet/Microchip-Sign-Up or at sdhumane.org/hiptochip.

Times will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Microchips will be available while supplies last. All dogs must have a collar and leash, and cats must be in a carrier. Because of COVID-19, humans must wear masks at all times and adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Make sure to also get your buddy a collar with tags too to help reunite them with you quicker if they ever get lost!
